![]() Hoffmann’s search through the available scientific literature yielded a way to alter salicylic acid chemically through modification of the hydroxyl group on the benzene ring. Eventually cited by many as the discoverer of aspirin, Hoffmann approached the task with a personal interest: his father suffered from rheumatism and was taking salicylic acid for it, but he could no longer ingest the drug without vomiting. In 1895, to counteract such problems, Arthur Eichengrün, the head of chemical research at Bayer, assigned the task of developing a “better” salicylic acid to one of the company’s chemists, Felix Hoffmann. Such use often led to gastrointestinal irritation, which could in turn lead to nausea, vomiting, bleeding, and ulcers. Just as the medical benefits of salicylic acid had long been known, so too had some of the health issues related to prolonged use of large doses of the drug. The company’s shift to pharmaceutical production coincided serendipitously with a boom in new pharmaceutical agents, making it seem that a new drug was put on the market almost daily. Because the Bayer Company was already well known, it easily developed brand-name recognition as a pharmaceutical maker. Friedrich Bayer and Company, a dye-manufacturing firm in Germany, began to shift its focus from the dye industry to pharmaceutical production. The beginning of aspirin as we know it today dates from the same period when Farbenfabriken vorm. In the late 1800s large-scale production of salicylic acid for the treatment of pain and fever was initiated by the Heyden Chemical Company in Germany. A pure crystalline form of salicin was isolated in 1829 by Henri Leroux, a French pharmacist, who then used it to treat rheumatism. ![]() In 1828 Johann Büchner, a professor at the University of Munich, isolated a yellow substance from the tannins of willow trees that he named salicin, the Latin word for willow. This investigation was driven in part by Napoleon’s continental blockade on imports, which affected suppliers of Peruvian cinchona-tree bark (another natural source of salicylic acid). ![]() The chemical investigation of the healing properties of the substance within the willow bark had already begun in earnest, however, during the early 19th century. And approximately 100 years later the Scottish physician Thomas MacLagan studied the effects of willow powder on patients suffering from acute rheumatism, demonstrating that it could relieve fever and joint inflammation. Around 100 CE the Greek physician Dioscorides prescribed willow bark as an anti-inflammatory agent.ĭespite this long history, it was not until 1763 that the Reverend Edward Stone of the Royal Society of London conducted one of the first clinical studies on the effects of willow-bark powder by treating patients suffering from ague (a fever thought to be caused by malaria). He recommended chewing on willow-tree bark to patients suffering from fever and pain, as well as the use of a tea brewed from willow bark given to women to lessen pain during childbirth. One of the most noteworthy reports of the use of salicylic acid comes from the father of modern medicine, Hippocrates (460–370 BCE). ![]() Both Chinese and Greek civilizations employed willow bark for medical use more than 2,000 years ago, and the Chinese also used poplar bark and willow shoots to treat rheumatic fever, colds, hemorrhages, and goiter. Ancient civilizations in Mesopotamia used the extract from willow trees to treat fever, pain, and inflammation. The first recorded use of salicylates dates back about 4,000 years to the Sumerians, who noted the pain remedies of the willow tree on early clay tablets. As such, salicylic acid-and related salicylates-have long been common components of a normal human diet, functioning as a natural defense against what we consider common ailments today. Salicylic acid is a main component of an herbal extract found in the bark of a number of trees, including the willow tree, and in a number of fruits, grains, and vegetables. Yet, while aspirin has been one of the most popular pharmaceutical agents of the past one hundred years, it is actually a synthetic derivative of the natural substance salicylic acid-the associated healing properties of which have been known for millennia. Like most of us, when you experience everyday aches and pains, a bottle of aspirin is probably the first thing you reach for. ![]() Headache? Fever? Muscle pain? “Take two aspirin and call me in the morning.” ![]()

![]() ![]() Night Shaym-Aliens!", a simulated, holographic projection of Jessica attempts to seduce Morty in exchange for the recipe for concentrated dark matter. Morty and she have a brief exchange before Rick rips him away. In the Pilot, when Rick Sanchez and Morty escape from Intergalactic Customs, the duo crash into her table. So far, she has only spoken to him directly three times. While they aren't friends per se, Jessica is genuinely nice to Morty and seems not to mind his company, even going with him to the school dance and grinding with him in "Big Trouble In Little Sanchez". Morty Smith has an obvious crush on Jessica, but she doesn't acknowledge Morty frequently. It remains to be seen how this has affected her overall personality as she is only shown in the immediate aftermath of getting rescued, but she seems to now think of herself as a "time god." In Pilot, she is impressed with Morty for coming into the cafeteria through a portal, and in "Big Trouble In Little Sanchez" when Morty tells her that tiny Rick is his grandpa in the body of a teenager, her only response is, "Cool."Īfter spending hundreds of years in the Narnia dimension frozen in a state of conscious cryostasis in " Mort Dinner Rick Andre", Jessica takes on a distinctly philosophical mindset about her place in the universe and time. She seems to consider abnormal things interesting, remaining surprisingly calm in various situations that would drive others crazy. Prior in the same episode, when Jessica gets turned off by Morty's annoying confidence due to his detoxification, she tries to get out of the date by pretending to receive an emergency text, but realizes she is being rude and instead politely tells him why they will not work out. She also helps Rick track down Morty to bring him back to his normal self in " Rest and Ricklaxation," and then shows concern after the process. ![]() She never shows any contempt for Morty and even greets him warmly despite their different popularity status. However, there are scenarios showing that she is a well-meaning and considerably nice person. This ultimately leads nowhere and Jessica remains a seemingly shallow character with plenty of potential for more development. In " Big Trouble In Little Sanchez" when Morty takes her to a school dance, she wears a lavender headband, a halter-strapped, lavender dress with a sweetheart neckline and a knee-length basque skirt (either unlined or filled out thinly with tulle layers) cinched at the waist by a bisected, paler lavender belt, and paler lavender, square-toe pumps.įor all of her outfits, her make-up appears to just be black or dark mascara and pale pink lip gloss. In " Rick Potion #9" when she attends the Flu Season Dance, she wears a cyan headband with a teal flower on the right side, a strapless, cyan dress with a sweetheart neckline and a knee-length basque skirt (likely filled out with tulle layers or a crinoline petticoat/underskirt) cinched at the waist by a broad teal sash tied into a darker teal bow at center-back, a pale pink corsage with a hot pink band on her right wrist (likely given to her by her date, Brad), and cyan, pointed-toe high heels. Day to day, she wears a pale cyan headband, a form-fitting, periwinkle polo, a box-pleated, mauve miniskirt, pale cyan mid-calf socks, and plain white loafers. Other staffers objected to the network’s statement on the lawsuit, which neglected to express support for the women who accused Corn of misconduct. “She told him personally that she wasn’t referring to him and called the team the next day to reiterate that her comment was not about any one individual.”īut the environment at ABC News in the wake of the lawsuit has been “chaotic,” according to staffers, who pointed to a series of hastily organized calls with news executives that only raised more questions about who knew what and when about the allegations against Corn. “Robin and George are fine,” ABC News spokesperson Caragh Fisher said in a statement to The Daily Beast, declining to address other questions including whether other women had come forward with allegations about Corn. Her agent, Jon Rosen of Endeavor, did not respond to requests for comment. Meanwhile, Roberts remains “incensed” about ABC’s handling of the allegations as well as her co-host’s actions (or lack thereof), and has made her feelings known to bosses, according to colleagues who have spoken with her in recent days. The network was so eager to please the famed anchor that Disney executive chairman Bob Iger and Peter Rice, chairman of general entertainment content, reportedly flew across the country to offer him a lucrative contract extension. His rep, Alan Berger of Creative Artists Agency, did not respond to a request for comment.īut ABC News staffers are questioning whether Stephanopoulos, a former political operative who gained notoriety as a Clinton White House aide and is now one of the most powerful people at ABC News, did enough to sound the alarm or intervene after he was informed of the allegations against Corn.Īs an example of the power and influence Stephanopoulos wields within ABC News, insiders pointed to a situation earlier this year in which he threatened to defect to a rival network over tensions with colleague and bitter rival David Muir. The GMA co-host and This Week moderator has been off the air in recent days, self-isolating after his daughter was diagnosed with COVID-19. The comment quickly made its way back to Stephanopoulos, who was “livid,” according to the people familiar. ABC News employees who spoke with The Daily Beast asked to do so anonymously out of fear of retaliation. Staffers who heard the remark said it was unsubtly directed at Stephanopoulos, who, according to the lawsuit, had been informed of Crawford’s sexual assault allegations almost four years ago and continued to work with Corn. GMA staffers discussed the lawsuit on a team-wide call, during which a clearly emotional Roberts declared, “If this happened to someone on my team, I would have burned the place down,” according to multiple people who were present for the meeting. Corn has vehemently denied the allegations, and ABC disputed the claims and vowed to fight them in court. Last week, Kirstyn Crawford, a producer who works closely with Stephanopoulos on the top-rated morning show, filed a lawsuit against Michael Corn, the former senior executive producer of GMA, alleging he sexually assaulted her and cultivated a toxic work environment. As such, recently installed news president Kim Godwin, who came into the job promising to clean up the culture, is now in her fourth month in the position and already dealing with the significant challenge of quelling internal dissent over the situation, according to sources. ![]() The fallout from the lawsuit has engulfed ABC News, with staffers furious about the company’s handling of the matter. A bombshell lawsuit against the former top producer of Good Morning America has ignited a firestorm behind the scenes, with co-hosts George Stephanopoulos and Robin Roberts allegedly at each other’s throats over the handling of claims that their former boss sexually assaulted multiple women at the network, four people with knowledge of the situation told The Daily Beast. ![]() ![]() ![]() In 2002, for example, various sensing instruments detected 17 distinct pyrocumulonimbus events in North America alone. The tropopause is the barrier between the lower atmosphere and stratosphere. One reason for the misinterpretation, Yue said, is that scientists believed nothing less energetic than a volcanic eruption could penetrate Earth's "tropopause" in so short a period of time. The plume thought to have been from Pinatubo was, it turns out, from a pyrocumulonimbus storm in Canada. Three "mystery cloud phenomena" were cited as examples that were actually the result of pyrocumulonimbus storms, including one initially attributed to the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines. What Blows Out a Speaker?īefore we go much further, let's talk about what exactly causes this problem. You can do this with the panning settings in your car's radio panel, on your entertainment center's receiver, or in your digital audio workstation software on your computer. It helps to mute the other speakers and listen only to the problematic one. You'll have to listen closely if it's not glaringly obvious. Another reason is that this noise follows the same pitches that are being produced by the music or voices being played back. One reason it can be subtle and hard to hear is that this distortion may be quietly embedded in the audio. ![]() If you've heard digital clipping then you're familiar with what I mean. It sounds like a bunch of bees buzzing around or a scratching sound interspersed with the rest of the audio. That's the sound you're probably hearing but at a much more subtle level. That buzzing sound was originally created by purposefully playing through a speaker with a torn cone. Think about the 1960's and 1970's rock era when guitarists like Jimi Hendrix used fuzz pedals, overdrive pedals, and distortion pedals to extreme degrees. Let's talk about the actual sound from a bad speaker. ![]() You want to catch it before it gets worse and/or make sure you're getting the best experience possible (for entertainment or worse, actual professional work). The real problem is if you're unsure about it because the change in audio quality is very subtle. You could also have a problem with gain staging (explained below). If no sound is being made at all, you have an electrical problem at hand. It's not too big of a deal if it's a cheap pair of headphones or a car speaker, but what if it's your guitar amp and you have a gig that night?įirst and foremost, without getting overly technical, let's call it a blown out speaker if:Īn unpleasant, bad sound can be a problem with the power source or could mean there's a small tear on the cone that can get worse over time. Generally you'll hear the term blown speaker used to describe any tweeter, woofer, or subwoofer that doesn't sound right or flat out isn't working at all. This one is for the regular people out there, and the artists playing amplified instruments, not the studio engineer types. I'm going to keep this one simple (not get too technical) since if you already know about this topic you won't be searching for it anyways. We'll sort it all out and I'll give you some professional guidance on how to proceed once you know exactly what the deal is. It could be blown out or have a problem within the power amplification stage. You're here so you probably have some indication that you're dealing with a problematic speaker. Most of the time we want a matching stereo pair so that can mean replacing two if it's in a sound system where the quality really matters, and this can get really pricey if we're talking about an entertainment center or a critical listening setup for mixing, mastering, or recording audio. ![]() And doubly so when you realize that if you'd caught it soon enough you could have saved it. No matter if you're talking about car speakers, studio speaker monitors, a guitar amplifier, or even some cheap computer or TV sound system, blown speakers are frustrating. ![]() ![]() ![]() This property advises that enhanced cleaning and guest safety measures are currently in place.
